A little over a year after I wrote an opinion piece on Why Gmail Needs A New Logo, Google has now released a new Gmail logo — which you can see below.

New Gmail Logo 2020

This is in tandem with the renaming of G-Suite and release of the new all-in-one workspace: Google Workspace. In an ever connected, “highly distributed and increasingly digitized world“, and with the advent of the Corona Virus, this makes a lot of sense and adds incredible value to the work place. Below is an excerpt from Google;

“Our new Google Workspace brand reflects this more connected, helpful, and flexible experience, and our icons will reflect the same. In the coming weeks, you will see new four-color icons for Gmail, Drive, Calendar, Meet, and our collaborative content creation tools like Docs, Sheets, Slides that are part of the same family. They represent our commitment to building integrated communication and collaboration experiences for everyone, all with helpfulness from Google.”

This indeed was the very argument I made over a year ago for Google to undertake such a move. Now with the context of Google Workspace, it makes an even greater impact.

So what do I think of the new logo?

First of, as mentioned before in my previous article, Gmail is 16 years old now with 1.5 billion users. It’s more than just a Google Docs or Google Sheets. It’s big and old enough to hold it’s own. This means it needs, as part of the larger ecosystem, to have it’s own identity. In short, this is more than an appropriate move.

As for the design, certainly they went with the isolated “M” for the monogram, which again, given the ubiquity of Gmail, is absolutely fine. The only issue I have with marrying this logo to the rest of the ecosystem, is with the sharp corners. For a fully unified approach, I would have rather rounded off all of the corners — to something a little bit like the comparison below.

This is how it would fit much better with the rest of the apps.
